Cisco 7000 processor architecture
The SP and SSP are responsible for packet switching. This switching pro-
cess uses both Layer 3 and Layer 2 information. From there, these system
processors (RP and SP/SSP) connect to the backplane in order to interface
with the individual interface processors.
In Figure 4.4, you see an alternative diagram, in which an RSP 7000 is
used in place of the two separate processor boards depicted in Figure 4.3.
The switch processor is integrated into the same board with the route
processor. The connection to the backplane does not change.
