ZIP, the world famous university, is currently experiencing problems on its campus LAN
network and would like to upgrade its campus LAN capabilities before the beginning of the fall
semester, because it wants to compete more effectively in recruiting new students on campus.
ZIP wants to give its students in the dormitory access to the campus LAN. The four dormitories
on campus can accommodate 750 students. ZIP wants each student to be able to access his or
her home directory files. In addition, each student should be able to upload and download
regular files and e-mail to the main campus server, ZIP1. ZIP students currently access the
Internet through their own dialup accounts. Therefore, there are no plans to provide access to
the Internet from the dormitory to the campus LAN design.
The folks at RouteitRight are having a discussion about the ZIP LAN. Billy Broadcast, a 1971
graduate of ZIP, wants to make sure that the ZIP campus design solves the current performance
problems. After a meeting with ZIP's president, Billy Broadcast identified the following
objectives that ZIP would like to achieve:
·
Increase enrollment by at least 10 percent each year
·
Attract the caliber of athletes who are currently enrolling at SNAFU, the crosstown rival
·
Allow students to connect to the campus network from their dormitory or home
·
Maintain or decrease the overall amount being spent on network operations
After an interview with the Dean of Housing, Peter Packett noted that, on a questionnaire,
students consistently listed poor performance of the dormitory network as a complaint. ZIP
installed a 10 Mbps flat network in the dormitories two years ago. Initially, it worked fine and
was well-received. For the past two years and, more specifically, since the release of DOOM
version 8.2, it has been plagued by performance problems.
