56 Chapter 2: Business and Technical Requirements
NOTE
Of course, all requirements should be delivered at the lowest possible cost.
Selecting the Right Device
Problems that a CCDP might be expected to solve include the following:
·
Media contention
·
Excessive broadcasts
·
Protocols that don't scale well
·
The need to transport new payloads
·
The need for more bandwidth
·
Overloaded backbone
·
Network-layer addressing issues
·
Security concerns
·
The need to reduce congestion
BREAKING NEWS
We interrupt this chapter to report the following:
Users report that e-mail sent this morning was not received at the destination site. Sammy
Sniffer reports via an unconfirmed trace that e-mail packets matching the description of the
missing packets were last seen on a network segment four hops away. If you encounter these
packets or have information concerning their whereabouts, take no action. Immediately contact
the network administrator.
Many design solutions to problems caused by poor network performance can be found in the
way devices are included in the network. When should the CCDP use a hub? A switch? A
bridge? A router?
This also depends on the business and technical requirements and on what problems you are
attempting to solve. As soon as the issues of cost and availability are resolved, the problems of
performance at each segment must be addressed. See Figure 2-6.
