Routing
Routing is closely related to the numbering plan and signaling just described. Routing allows
the establishment of a call from the source telephone to the destination telephone. However,
most routing is much more sophisticated. It lets subscribers select services or divert calls from
one subscriber to another. Dialing tables and SS7 are used for routing.
Routing occurs as a result of establishing a set of tables or rules within each switch. As each
call arrives, the path to the desired destination and the types of services available are derived
from these tables or rules. It is important to know just how the routing and the associated
features are accomplished in the voice network because these functions might have to be
provided in an integrated voice-data network.
Dial Plans
A dial plan is a set of rules for routing incoming and outgoing calls and accessing voice calls
from one system to another. All calls are routed based on the configured dial plan. The dial plan
is a required configuration on the switch, PBX, or key system.
Here are the benefits of a dial plan:
·
Controls the behavior of the voice system
·
Enables reliability and security
·
Enables cost savings
