Multiservice networking suggests that voice, video, and data can travel over a single packet-
cell-based infrastructure.
The benefits of multiservice networking are reduced operational costs, higher performance,
greater flexibility, integration and control, and faster new application and service deployment.
Although most discussion of a multiservice converged network focuses on voice, video, and
data, this chapter focuses specifically on the issues that govern voice over data. Although the
voice-over-data solution is wonderful in that it allows network managers to access the Internet
as an alternative to the more-costly toll solutions, there are issues associated with the
convergence. Data networks and protocols were not designed to handle the special
requirements of voice. Voice is sensitive to time and delay. Merging voice and data offers a
significant opportunity for savings but also presents a significant challenge to the network
designer. The goal of a well-designed voice-over-data network is to achieve a convergence of
the voice and data infrastructures in a single multiservice network. Figure 16-3 shows a
multiservice network converging voice, video, and data.
