CIP SNA 495
Notice in Figure 13-17 the phrase "TCP/IP Offload." TCP/IP Offload is a handy Cisco IOS
feature that offloads the building of IP headers and TCP headers from the mainframe to the
router, saving mainframe CPU cycles. However, the need for a TCP/IP stack on the mainframe
still exists.
CIP SNA
Another feature that the CIP card supports is CIP SNA (CSNA). CSNA lets the CIP talk directly
to the VTAM on the host and gives customers a way to replace their channel-attached FEPs.
CSNA delivers traffic to and from the mainframe from a variety of sources, including DLSw+,
DSPU, APPN, RSRB, SDLLC, and QLLC.
LAN and WAN Interconnectivity with the CIP
The Cisco CIP, with the range of function and power of the Cisco 7000 and 7500 series, is a
high-performance data center internetworking product with broad connectivity that is easy to
manage. Many LAN and WAN technologies are supported, including 10 Mbps Ethernet, 100
Mbps Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, low- and high-speed serial links, Frame Relay, ATM,
High-Speed Serial Interface (HSSI), and ISDN.
