Then continue connecting the SNA devices. Thoroughly check router processes and buffers to
make sure the routers are not being overworked. Migrating from SNA FEPs to Cisco routers
might leave the customer with extra front-end processors (FEPs) and nothing to do with them.
In some cases, the FEPs might be able to be sold back to IBM, or possibly another customer of
IBM, because FEPs are quite expensive. The CCDP could make enough money for the
company to pay for the routers, and even make some profit from the whole transaction for
the company.
Migrating from FEPs to Cisco routers also saves money in support costs. It is more cost-
effective to support Cisco routers than IBM FEPs. Another possibility is for cost savings in
multiple mainframe environments where an abundance of cross-domain traffic is implementing
the APPN feature of the Cisco IOS. APPN is discussed in more detail later in this chapter.
