412 Chapter 11: Remote Access
These are "run from Flash" routers and often do not require a lot of RAM
because the IOS executes from Flash. Normally the IOS is stored in Flash
memory and is loaded from there into RAM memory, where it is executed.
However, with the 2500 series, the IOS executes from Flash. Two models have
plug-in modules available. The 2524 and 2525 accept up to three WAN modules.
The 2500 series uses Motorola processors. Newer models might actually run
from RAM. It might be worthwhile to check.

Cisco 2600 series
The 2600 series modular-based routers extend enterprise-class versatility,
integration, and power to branch offices. As new services and applications
become available, these routers offer a branch office solution that provides the
versatility needed to adapt to changes in network technology. The Cisco 2600
series shares modular interfaces with the Cisco 1600, 1700, and 3600 series,
providing a cost-effective solution to meet today's branch office needs for
applications, including:
-- Analog and digital dialup access services
-- VPN access
-- Inter-VLAN routing with the 2621 model
The 2621 comes with 100 Mbps Ethernet interfaces that can be encapsulated
with the ISL protocol, allowing the router to route between VLANs.
Regional
The Cisco 4500 and 4700 series access routers are high-performance, modular, central-site
routers that support a broad range of LAN and WAN technologies. They are intended for large
regional offices that don't need the number of LAN and WAN connections that Cisco's 7200
series provides.
Cisco 7200 routers are very high-performance, modular, regional or central-site routers that
support a variety of LAN and WAN technologies using convenient modular plug-in boards.
They are the only routers that support ATM CES cards, which provide circuit emulation
services. The CES port adapter is an ATM access concentrator on a card that provides the
concentration of voice, video, and data traffic over a single ATM trunk.
The 7200 is targeted at large regional offices that might spoke out to branch offices, as depicted
in Figure 11-19.
