286 Chapter 8: AppleTalk
Scenarios
Scenario
To help you design the optimum solution and address the issues presented in each chapter, you
have contracted with the design professionals at RouteitRight to help you.
Southwest Routing would like an analysis of its Bridgeport, New Mexico, branch location. The
Bridgeport location has four departments located on four different floors:
·
Sales and Marketing
·
Service and Support
·
Engineering
·
Manufacturing
Each department needs to support AppleTalk, Novell, and NetBIOS applications. Each floor of
the building has a router, and the computers are connected via Ethernet. In addition, corporate
servers exist that use AppleTalk and IPX applications.
Design a set of AppleTalk and Novell addressing and naming conventions that will support the
needs of Southwest Routing.
Network numbers can be allocated by department. These numbers are facilitated to help
administration and troubleshooting. Note that the cable ranges (for AppleTalk) and the network
numbers (for Novell) for each LAN are unique and do not overlap. In this scenario, the network
numbers are used to designate the network's physical location. For example, Sales and
Marketing is located on the first floor and has the first range of numbers. Here are the ranges of
numbers:
Sales and Marketing
10001999
Service and Support
20002999
Engineering
30003999
Manufacturing
40004999
These numbers can be used for AppleTalk as well as Novell.
Answer to Scenario
An AppleTalk zone name can match the functional description of a division, department, or
organization. So it makes sense to use the existing departments as zone names. In the case of
Southwest Routing, SalesMarket, Engineering, Manufacturing, and ServeSupport are names
that could be used. Using the division names makes it easier for users to identify and locate
resources.
