278 Chapter 8: AppleTalk
Routers must be configured to pass DHCP broadcasts across the network. The ip helper
address
command forwards broadcasts across the network and sends DHCP packets to the
nearest DHCP servers.
When designing for DHCP, the CCDP should be mindful of the following:
·
Address assignments
-- What IP address options will the client receive?
-- Which devices do not need to be DHCP clients?
-- Routers, switches, servers, hubs, printers
-- Have any IP addresses been reserved?
·
DHCP lease length
·
DHCP server redundancy
-- Are multiple servers on a subnet serving as DHCP servers?
-- Will a DHCP server supply addresses to multiple subnets?
Remote Design
Windows NT and Windows 2000 come with Microsoft's remote-access server (RAS), which
uses the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). Windows supports TCP/IP, IPX, and NetBEUI for dial-
in. Cisco access servers are the recommended choice for a remote design solution because its
dial-in pools have better dial-in density and performance.
