Use Expressive Names for Zones
Zone names should describe the functionality within the organization. A zone could represent
the department it serves. Changing AppleTalk zone names is difficult. Routers must be
reloaded to clear and reload routing tables. Whenever possible, design zone names in advance
so that they relate to the task at hand. Figure 8-5 depicts a network that uses expressive names
for zones.

AppleTalk Filtering Options
There are four methods of filtering network and zone information in AppleTalk:
·
GetZoneList (GZL) filter--Controls the zones seen on a network segment by AppleTalk
workstations and has no effect on neighbor routers. GZL filtering must be implemented
on all routers on the segment to work properly.
-- Filters ZIP information locally between a router and hosts.
-- Use to hide specific zones from users on specific networks.
-- Does not scale because each router must be configured.
·
Distribute list
-- Controls RTMP broadcasts between routes.
-- Use to block cable ranges.
-- Do not use to hide zones.
·
ZIP reply filter--Filters zone information between routers and control zones seen by
neighbor routers and downstream routers. ZIP filters can hide zones from all AppleTalk
devices on the network.
·
NBP filter--Can reduce unnecessary overhead traffic. Access can be permitted or denied
to a single device or multiple devices.
