240 Chapter 7: OSPF, EIGRP, and IGRP
EIGRP Supports Mobile IP
Mobile IP is most useful in environments where mobility is desired and the traditional landline
dial-in model or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) solutions are inadequate. If it
is necessary or desirable for a user to maintain a single address while he makes the transition
between networks and network media, Mobile IP can let him do this. Generally, Mobile IP is
most useful in environments where a wireless technology is being utilized. This includes
cellular environments and wireless LAN situations that might require roaming.
Each mobile node is always identified by an exception address. This address and route are
propagated for a host that moves away from its subnet. Because the host route is more specific
than the subnet route, the traffic is still routed to the host. The only devices that need to be aware
of the movement of this node are the mobile device and a router serving the user.
EIGRP Supports VLSM
Like IGRP, EIGRP performs summarization by default automatically on network boundaries.
However, EIGRP can be configured to advertise across a different major network.
