Components of EIGRP 239
Automatic redistribution makes upgrading the network to EIGRP a snap:
·
IP EIGRP automatically redistributes routes with IGRP in the same AS.
·
AppleTalk EIGRP automatically redistributes with AppleTalk RTMP.
·
IPX EIGRP automatically redistributes with IPX RIP and NLSP.
EIGRP Characteristics
EIGRP has several constructive characteristics that enhance network design:
·
Scalability--Like IGRP, EIGRP can be configured for large internetworks. EIGRP can
scale up to 255 hops.
·
Fast convergence--EIGRP can converge within 1 second of detecting a link failure.
EIGRP uses DUAL, which allows route filtering at any node and propagation to only the
affected nodes, ensuring quick, loop-free convergence.
·
Sophisticated metric--To ensure route-selection flexibility, EIGRP uses the same
composite metric as IGRP. Internetwork delay, bandwidth, reliability, and load are all
factored into the routing decision.
·
Multiple paths--EIGRP can maintain up to four unequal paths between a network source
and destination. Multiple paths can be used to increase available bandwidth or for route
redundancy.
·
Supports mobile hosts--EIGRP allows local mobility within the same major network.
By default, EIGRP uses a combination of bandwidth and delay as a routing metric. In addition
to bandwidth and delay, EIGRP can be configured to track the following metrics:
·
Reliability
·
Loading
·
MTU (static)
·
Hop count (up to 255)
NOTE
By default, EIGRP uses no more than 50 percent of a link's bandwidth. When running EIGRP
on a low-bandwidth WAN link, change the amount of bandwidth that EIGRP uses with the
command ip bandwidth-percent eigrp.
