NOTE
Use static addresses for fixed network devices such as servers, printers, routers, and managed
hubs. Use DHCP for end stations and PCs.
DHCP Relay
You can configure DHCP relay on a Cisco router by configuring ip helper-address with the
address of the DHCP server on the interface that will have DHCP clients. To prevent the
forwarding of other broadcasts to the DHCP server, add ip forward-protocol udp bootpc to the
router configuration.
Multicast Routing
Companies are beginning to see an increased benefit in using applications that send information
to a large number of users at the same time. For example, video teleconferencing requires the
capability to send video information to several teleconferencing sites at once. Unicast and
broadcast networks cannot satisfy the demand for multimedia applications. IP multicasting, the
transmission method that can send IP datagrams to multiple nodes in a logical group, is the
answer. Multicasting can contain the multimedia requirements for one-to-many or many-to-
many communications.
The Internet's Multicast Backbone (MBONE) was developed to handle multicast traffic across
the Internet. Multimedia conferencing tools have been developed for multicasting across the
network. These tools allow audio streams and/or video streams to be transmitted across the
MBONE. Multimedia applications, desktop conferencing, and other up-and-coming
applications will demand the capability to communicate from one to many or from many to
many hosts. Multicast routing allows routers to communicate efficiently from one route to many
routes.
How MBONE Works
If a client wants to join a multicast application, that client (or application) must inform the
server that they want to join the multicast group and receive data from the multicast. The client
will receive an address, allowing it to join and receive data. Routers need to know which
stations should receive the multicast and which ones shouldn't. Routers use the Internet Group
Management Protocol
(IGMP) to determine which, if any, hosts on a segment belong to a
particular group and need to receive the multicast traffic. If IGMP is not configured on the
switch, the switch will essentially broadcast the multicast traffic to all ports.
