The campus buildings are connected by ATM, and the floors are connected by FDDI. This
example uses a combination of routing and switching. ATM can be used as a point-to-point
network. Figure 4-8 shows an example.

ATM can be configured as a full-mesh virtual circuit between routers. Each router can transmit
directly to every other router over ATM. Figure 4-9 shows how ATM can be used as a router
cluster backbone.

Routers can connect the LAN and WAN data links to ATM backbones.
ATM as a Wide-Area Network
The Cisco ATM products suited for WAN deployment include the following:

Cisco/StrataCom IGX switch, which is well-suited for deployment in an enterprise WAN
environment
·
Cisco/StrataCom BPX/AXIS switch, which meets the needs of high-end enterprise WAN
and service provider environments
