124 Chapter 4: ATM Solutions
ATM as a Local Area Network
LAN Emulation (LANE) is an ATM Forum standard that allows Ethernet and Token Ring clients
to connect to an ATM network.
The LANE requirement makes ATM look like Ethernet or Token Ring. Therefore, an Ethernet
client can send packets from endpoint to endpoint without realizing that it has traveled through
an ATM network. ATM is connection-oriented, so it removes the connection requirements from
the upper-layer protocols.
Emulated LANs (ELANs) have many of the same characteristics as virtual LANs (VLANs).
ELANs rely on a group of ATM devices and Layer 2 LAN switches. Together, the devices
comprise an independent broadcast domain. ELANs are interconnected by routing.
Living in the Fast Lane: A Tender Moment
There are millions of bits in the big city. This is a story about one of them. The names have been
changed to protect the protocols. Delivering data on an Ethernet bus is a tough job, but
someone's got to do it. On the Ethernet bus, there are no red lights, no stop signs. You travel at
your own risk. The road is difficult at best. It's paved with hardships unforeseen. Every
transmission is a new test. It is indeed a tough way to earn a living. The next time you open a
document or send an e-mail, take a moment and say thanks to Billy Bitts.
Every day, Billy Bitts makes a living visiting ports up and down the Ethernet expressway. It
is a life filled with uncertainty. Living a life of collisions is tough. But Billy's a dreamer. One
day, he says, when he gets that promotion and raise, he won't have to put up with collisions
every day.
After one especially tough week living in and out of the bit bucket, Billy finally got the break
he was looking for. One day, he made a delivery to the VeeLan Cafe. While there, he met a
waitress who took his clock pulse away. Her name was Daisy Chaine, and she told him about a
place he could work where he would never have a collision, he would never hear customers
complain about slow delivery, and he could spend his time cruising in the fast lane.
Daisy took Billy to the place. For Billy, it was love at first byte. Billy and Daisy shared A Tender
Moment together and called the place she discovered A Tender Moment (ATM) Lane.
Billy had a lot of questions about ATM Lane. It was unlike any place he had ever seen on the
Ethernet expressway. Billy asked Daisy:
·
How would he find addresses on ATM Lane?
·
How would new clients be welcomed to ATM Lane?
·
How are packets broadcast?
·
How are packets multicast?
