Deploying VLANs 95
Implementing VLANs
To connect different VLANs, several standards have been implemented. These standards permit
connectivity for shared FDDI, Fast Ethernet, and ATM backbones:
·
IEEE 802.10 is the standard for shared-medium backbones, such as FDDI, 10 Mbps
Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, serial connections, and so on.
·
Inter-Switch Link (ISL) is the Cisco proprietary standard for connecting Cisco switches.
·
LAN Emulation is the ATM standard for providing services to ATM end stations.
·
IEEE 802.1q is the multivendor standard for VLANs. It allows Cisco devices to interact
with other vendors.
