Scenario 1 71
Segmentation with switches will provide dedicated bandwidth relief for the students at
ZIP by increasing the network's available bandwidth. In addition, segmentation enables
high-speed data exchanges. Switches will reduce the number of LAN collisions, improve
network response and overall performance, and increase user productivity.
6
How would you minimize broadcasts and collisions in your network design?
By installing switches. Examples of Cisco LAN switches include the Catalyst 2900, 5000,
and 6000 series. Switch selection depends on several factors: the number of ports
required, scalability, and the budget allocated to the design solution.
7
What protocol would you use for transport on the backbone between dormitories?
ATM Transport or Gigabit Ethernet would ensure high-speed transport on the campus
backbone.
Answers to Scenario 2
1
What upgrades would you recommend to facilitate these changes?
Collapsed backbone (see Figure 2-10) in the athletic dormitory represents a cost-effective
approach to giving the athletes connectivity. Switches on each floor connect to the end
workstations, and each switch attaches to a separate LAN interface on the router. If
redundancy is required, a second router can be installed with HSRP.
